Down Syndrome

Facts about Down Syndrome
Named after John Langdon Down, the first physician to identify the syndrome, Down syndrome is the most frequent genetic cause of mild to moderate intellectual and developmental disabilities and associated medical problems and occurs in one out of 800 live births, in all races and economic groups. Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder caused by an error in cell division that results in the presence of an additional third chromosome 21 or “trisomy 21.”

Dr. Won attentively managed my second pregnancy. I previously had a second trimester loss attributed to cervical incompetence and then carried another pregnancy to term with the use of cervical cerclage and extended bed rest. Due to my high risk obstetric history, I was unsure how difficult or feasible another pregnancy would be. My husband and I were put at ease during what may have otherwise been a stressful time. Dr. Won’s personalized care made me feel like one-in-a-million rather than one of many. The staff at Diablo Valley Perinatal Associates was fabulous; friendly and professional. From check-in to follow-up, our experience was exceptional. I would highly recommend Diablo Valley Perinatal Associates to colleagues, friends and family members.

FACTS:

Why is an ultrasound exam so important in pregnancy?

— During the first trimester, a fetal ultrasound determines the health of an early pregnancy with the measurement of the nuchal translucency.

— During the second trimester, a fetal ultrasound rules out most birth defects with a comprehensive evaluation of the fetal anatomy.

— During the third trimester, a fetal ultrasound evaluates the size of the developing baby and identifies pregnancies with abnormal growth.
